Do you want to succeed? To be more or better than you are?  Goal setting is an absolute must for people who truly want to succeed.  It is a simple thing to realize you will not know where you are going unless you know where you want to go.

The exciting thing is that if you do it right with clear intent, your mind is programmed to assist you to succeed.  The brain is a goal-seeking organism! Once the goal is set your brain will begin to identify resources, help research what you need to know, see opportunities, and direct you toward success.  This is proven true no matter what circumstances are happening when you set the goal.

You must, however, do it right.  This means making your goal as specific and measurable as possible.  Without identifying components such as how much and by when, what you hope to obtain is not much more than a wish.  A complete goal is actually: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound – a SMART Goal.

Your goal should help you to determine exactly what you want to accomplish, experience, acquire, or be.  One of the main reasons most people do not get what they want is that they aren’t clear about what they want. Individual goals build upon themselves and interact with others to define the important areas of your life.  Generally, these include: Financial, Career or Business, Family, Health or Appearance, Relationships, Personal Growth, and Making a Difference in the World.

As you begin to establish SMART Goals for each of these areas it is also a good idea to define both a short term and a long-term target.  In addition, you may also want to set one or two overarching or stretch goals that identify ultimate obtainment.

Goals without action remain little more than words on paper or the computer screen.  This is only the first piece of the puzzle.  Your goals will not be achieved without a commitment to action.  This action must be both strategic and consistent.  In another post I described the Rule of Five as a method of getting what you want out of life.  In a nutshell it states that you must be taking actions to help achieve your goals daily.

You have the power to make your life whatever you want it to be!  Success does not depend on anyone else and is generally not able to be overcome by circumstances in your life.
